I thought linkbacks were bad?

I was under the impression that linkbacks like A to A were bad for seo. Perhaps I'm wrong?

A to A would be linking to itself.
If you mean A to B, it's not bad, it's just not as good as ABC or ABCD.

My understanding is that A-B B-A is not as valuable a trade as A-B C-D. I doubt that it will actually count against you though.

Bad? Heavens no... You should have at least some if you have a large site with hundreds of links... On a page you are trying to get ranked I probably wouldn't do it... But on a large blog I would have plenty of them.
