I fail to see why the site is closing down its operation, merely being removed from googles index should not impact on its established customer base or am I missing something here?

It isn't just that site, it's their entire network of sites.
They were using that to supply paid for one way links. Now the network has been de-indexed, those links are without value.

In other words.... Google is now specifically looking at individual networks that sell links and is de-indexing the entire network. Pretty scary. Imagine having your sites in that network selling your links... And those sites actually did some money making outside of being sold for their link value... ouch!
