I'm sorry but IMO putting links in your sidebars to other mainstream sites and getting links from other mainstream sites from simple text links to your mainstream site hurts you more than helps you. In fact it's a trick some use to actually lower a site ranking.
The only links that will help a mainstream site from another site is links in content.
Tradespun => Trafficspun is still going. Problem is that most people in mainstream are afraid of letting others know what they do.
In adult you want your site to reach Alexa 1000 or less. You want someone to mention it on Howard Stern. You want it out there.
In mainstream most people don't want anyone to know about their site as a brand. They want only Google to know it exists and serve it up high in the SERPs. So mainstream wise there is very little activity since nobody wants anyone to know how they are making money. Here everyone is active all day long. They want people to know about their sites. They couldn't give a fuck if you try to copy their business plan.
