Had the same strange behaviour from Attila a few times ... But in general - if done properly I see no problems with removing a link ... there can be a variety of reasons - expired domain, new link strategy, new anchors, new interpretation of the algorithms to please, the trade having gone loopsided...

Why would somebody manually band legitimate site with legitimate footer links. Whys is 100 links in sidebar good, but 20 links in footer bad? In my eyes - 100 links in sidebar looks more spammy than 20 in footer.
