But in general - if done properly I see no problems with removing a link ... there can be a variety of reasons - expired domain, new link strategy, new anchors, new interpretation of the algorithms to please, the trade having gone loopsided...

If you don't have many outgoing links and that number is too high it might be that your sites was hacked and links were added without you knowing. Especially if its common CMS as wordpress.
